Old Bawn Community School Debating Team was set up in 2015. It began with a small number of students, and is facilitated and guided by three teachers from the staff: Ms Brennan, Ms. Foy, and Ms. Ounnar.
The team meets every Monday at lunch time in the McMahon Library and each week the mentoring teachers arrange for activities and motions for the students to research. Practice debates are held in the library during alternate weeks.
Friendly debates are organised with teams at a similar level of practice in local schools.
Debating is an extremely valuable extra-curricular activity for building confidence for public speaking and also for fostering an interest in social justice, political and ethical issues linked with a broad range of topics.
