2016/2017 was a terrific year for the girls’ basketball teams in Old Bawn Community School. From early September the teams had been training hard each week with a goal to move up a division for the next year. Both the u16s and u18s were off to a great start, with victories over local teams such as Tallaght C.S and Adamstown C.S. Both teams progressed onto the quarter final stages to face Ardgillian with more success to be had. Onto the semi-final against St. Michaels Finglas, the u18s were narrowly defeated, but we saw more success for the u16s who sailed through to the final in Inchicore on 7th December to face Lucan C.C, a team who we have been narrowly beaten by in previous years. The girls were lead out by Captain Cynthia Oladejobi, and played an excellent game of basketball with excellent scores from Michelle Okafor, Victoria Babalola as well as our 2nd year stars Tara O’Doherty and Stephie Nwakor. The u16s were narrowly defeated, but returned home with silver medals and determination for next year.

After Christmas, the 1st and 2nd year teams were hard at work. Both teams followed in the steps of the senior teams, again defeating local teams such as Tallaght C.S. and St. Aidans C.S. to progress onto the quarter finals to face Luttrellstown C.C. and then onto the semi-finals. The 1st years were to meet Adamstown C.S., the only team to have beaten them and unfortunately this was to be repeated as they lost the game by one basket. There is no doubt the 1st years will be extremely successful in their years to come. The 2nd years travelled to Kishoge C.C. and after a terrific game of basketball, with great displays of team work, they were through to the final in Inchicore on 23rd March. A group of supporters cheered on as the 2nd year team was lead out by captain Tara O’Doherty faced a tall Fingal C.C. team in what was to a terrific game of basketball.  The game flew off to a terrific start with scores from Hannah Prendergast, Stephie Nwakor and Mileaha McCarton. The team kept the momentum going, with great rebounds from Alex Webb and Aimee McMullan and excellent free-throws from Tara O’Doherty, every player on the team played a part in what was to be a terrific performance leading to gold medals and a trophy to lift on the final whistle.

There was further success for this 2nd year team as they travelled to the National Basketball Arena for the annual Garda Tallaght Secondary Schools Basketball Tournament. The 2nd year girls team fought off all local opposition and captured the title after a 22-10 point victory over Tallaght CS in the final.

The girls’ teams have achieved their aim and have been regraded to play in the C division next year! Coaches Louise O’Doherty and Ms Murray are looking forward to what next year has in store. To our 6th year players; Katie Wilkie, Britney Nwakor, Catherine Falore, Mary Adeleke, Maryam Dongo and Tomiwa Adenekan, we wish you all the best in the future.
